Your moving house checklist will quickly become the most important document on the face of the earth once you have decided to move. In fact, even before you start looking for domestic removals companies we advise you to put together your master moving house checklist. Now, we are sure that you have already heard this advice, but what does it really mean and what should you have on your checklist? Keep reading for ideas of the kind of things you should have on your list.

6 months before
· Start looking for house movers. Now, although this might seem like an obvious task, you should remember that it will take you some time to find several quotes, compare the prices and choose a domestic removals company. Since you should secure a firm as early as possible, finding a moving company should be the first thing on your moving house checklist.
· Begin preparing your children for the move by announcing your move and taking them to explore the neighbourhood where they will be living.

3 months before
· Start taking an inventory of everything in your home. You can begin deciding on the furniture that you will be taking to your new place and what you will be replacing. If you are not taking certain items, then now is a good time to get rid of them – either by disposing of them, giving them away or selling them. If you are going to keep something but do not have enough place for it at your new home, then arrange for self storage.
· Make a list of all your credit cards, financial institutes, monetary funds, governmental offices, clubs, organizations, family, friends and acquaintances – this list will help you to notify the proper people about your address change in a timely manner.

6 weeks before
· Start packing! Begin with the rooms that are least used and where you are not likely to need any items until you move to your new place.
· Contact the post office to change your address and have your mail forwarded. Processing a mail forwarding request can take up to 6 weeks in some jurisdictions.

1 month before
· Advise your children’s school of the move and register them in a school in your new area
· Start packing up main areas of house
· Arrange for babysitting on moving day for your children and/or for your pets
· Inform everyone on your list about your new address
· If you are moving far away, arrange for your medical records to be transferred to your new physician

2 weeks before
· Call your house movers to confirm your contract
· Call your utility companies to have your utilities disconnected at your old address and arrange for them to be reconnected at your new address

1 week before
· Finish packing and remember to keep a box of your personal effects open – this box will be travelling with you in your car. It should contain your important documents, a change of clothes, your personal hygiene products and your moving house checklist.

1 day before
· Call your domestic removals provider to confirm your move.
· Finish last minute packing
